Master Yusuf Atkins honored with student of the year nomination

The Young Leaders’ Academy of Baton Rouge is proud to announce that Master Yusuf Atkins, Jr., attended East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s 2012 Students of the Year awards reception on Wednesday, Feb. 8 as the student of the year nominee from Brownfields Elementary School’s fifth grade class. The fifth grade teachers at Brownfields Elementary nominated Master Yusuf, 10, based on his excellent academic achievement, leadership ability and citizenship.

Master Yusuf’s successes do not stop there. He has been in the Gifted and Talented Program at Brownfields Elementary since the first grade and continues to maintain his A and B average. Yusuf has also achieved other special honors, like representing Brownfields Elementary as a Stuent Ambassador for the East Baton Rouge Magnet Mania Program in 2010 and 2011. He is active in the drama club, Young Astronauts Club and Logo’s and Life Bible church, where he serves as a youth usher. Yusuf’s goal is to attend Louisiana State University and major in Electrical Engineering.

Wanjennia Atkins, Yusuf’s mother, feels blessed that he has the support from Young Leaders Academy and his teachers to continue on this path of success.  “Yusuf’s father and I are very, very proud of him. We thank God for continuing to bless Yusuf in his life and school endeavors,” Atkins said.


On Saturday, January 21, 2012, YLA Program Manager Ken McFarland took YLA seventh and eighth graders to volunteer at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
