"Leadership means showing others that you have the courage of your convictions and think creatively to generate hope in seemingly hopeless situations." - Vincent Pan, 1999 Brick Award Winner

NATURE’S HELPERS

On November 11th Young Leaders’ Academy seventh graders went to the Mary Ann Brown Preserve located along the eastern boundary of the Tunica Hills in West Feliciana Parish. The 110-acre Preserve was donated to the Nature Conservancy by Mrs. L. Heidel Brown and the late Mr. Brown in 1998, which she named after her daughter.

The boys cut down pine trees that had begun to overcrowd the Preserve. The pine trees were keeping the hardwood trees, such as sweet gums and live oaks from prospering. Nature Conservancy Director, Keith Ouchley, said that the purpose of Mary Anne Brown Preserve is to protect native Louisiana plants and their habitats.

The Young Leaders also helped the Nature Conservancy by painting the dock and a small bridge on the Preserve with a waterproofing agent. After work they ate lunch and then Keith Ouchley led them on a fun and educational hike through the woods. The Young Leaders worked hard and got to experience the great outdoors. Young Leaders Brandon Lewis and Johnell Joseph said that they learned that they really like the outdoors and that being out in the wilderness was a great experience for them.

HILLHAVEN EAST

At Hillhaven East Nursing Home on November 18th, Young Leaders’ Academy sixth graders, showed the spirit of Thanksgiving when they helped the residents decorate their doors for Thanksgiving. Young Leaders made banners filled with pictures and kind words for the residents to enjoy. Residents and Young Leaders got their creative juices flowing and enjoyed visiting together.

Ever resourceful, Young Leaders used stickers and stencils that were included in their packages of construction paper to aid in their design.
